I Can Dance: My Life with a Disability
Laurie is 57 years old. She was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA 2) and has lived with a significant physical disability since the age of two, using a wheelchair since the age of five. She is retired from her position as Chief Deputy Director for the California State Council on Developmental Disabilities, is a mother of two adult children and a grandmother of three grandsons. She is active in community writing groups and a frequent speaker. Her memoir “I Can Dance: My Life with a Disability” is available from most online bookstores. An editor and consultant as well as the author, of seven books, she participates in workshops and is a frequent public speaker. Over the past four years, she has written--and promoted-- a series of four books in collaboration with Scientific American: Day in the Life of Your Brain (2009), Brave New Brain (2010), Book of Love, Sex, and the Brain (2012) and The Healthy Aging Brain, just published. Judith lives in Sacramento, and travels as widely and often as possible.

Anthony Barcellos grew up speaking Portuguese on his grandfather's dairy farm in Porterville, a small town in central California's Tulare County. While he retains some rudiments of his first language, today Barcellos is much better at using English. He teaches math full-time at American River College and regards it as the best job he's ever had, despite his rewarding experiences in journalism and state government. Tony currently resides in Davis, California, with 30 overflowing bookcases and is a 2005 alumnus of the local University of California campus' School of Education doctoral program in mathematics education.

Three Hours with Self-Publishing Experts

Jennifer has worked in the book business for eons and has more than 50 titles under her belt. Her eye-opening take on publishing will start you off on the right foot in your author's journey and, she'll introduce you to the 
local POD - the Espresso Book Machine at the Main Sacramento Library - one of two in California that prints out paperback books as you watch. 

THE INSIDE: Editing – what kind do you need? (the red pen behind your words)

You love the words that started in your mind and came through your fingertips onto the paper, but that doesn’t mean you made the best choice of words or that the words are appropriate for your audience.

Award winning journalist, photographer, and writing coach, Diane Covington discusses editing that makes the reader want to keep turning the pages. She also she has great tips on how to proof your own work.

THE OUTSIDE: The fine art of cover design by Karen Phillips, Phillips Covers  

A great cover grabs the reader’s attention and tempts them to open the book; the size and look of your book need to match your audience and story genre.  

Karen's a professional graphic designer who specialized in book covers for self-publishing authors. She'll show you samples of winning covers and explain why they  create excitement and beg the reader to pick it up and make a purchase.
